Sunday Shorts: How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse

SundayShorts

Near the end of October, the Missouri Department of Conservation held a program called Survival Skills 101: Zombies at Busch Wildlife.  I’ve been a fan of anything zombie-related for years (I’ve also mentioned before in here that The Walking Dead is my current favorite airing TV show), so when I heard a call that they needed extras to play zombies, I decided it’d be a fun thing to sign up for.  Plus, I thought if anybody needed help doing makeup, I could possibly be of some use… (it turns out most people had fun doing there’s on their own except a couple, which was fine!)

So, get ready for LARGE photo dump!

 Here’s me– Zombie Celeste:

I used a combination of Halloween costume makeup and mostly drug-store brand cosmetics.  It was really inexpensive to create this, which is what I was going for.  I actually used mostly e.l.f. brand!

How to Survive a Zombie Apacolypse eventThere was quite a nice turn-out of people (ages 13+) looking to get educated on how to survive a zombie apocalypse. Lia, the event organizer said around 275 showed up, I believe!

News Channel 4 5 St. LouisBoth St. Louis News Channel 4 and News Channel 5 were there to do fun stories on the event.  I never got to see clips of them, though as I was still too busy trying to bite people when it was airing! :( :(.  Otherwise, I would have loved to link to a clip of it if either channel had put one on their site or Youtube!

Zombie SpeechAfter the event kicked off, everyone divided up into eight different stations.  Each station taught a different survival skill for roughly 20 minutes and participants could attend them in any order they’d like. After twenty minutes were up, a horn would blare which would be the signal for the people to rotate to the next station.

Zombie Survival TrainingAt this station, each piece of paper represents different items and show how much they’d weigh. I believe this was a “What to Pack” exercise.

Where did the zombies come in? Most of the time we wandered around in the background minding our own business.

After the horn blared for the people to switch stations, that was our cue to become alerted to the sound and chase people to their next stations. Some people were REALLY into it and would run for their lives.  I feel like I genuinely creeped up and scared some people, too which was a lot of fun!

Near the conclusion of the event, lots of kids enjoyed taunting us zombies (we were still in character) from outside of the safe zone, and then a few decided to be brave enough to try to get us to chase them.  We did, of course!

After everything was said and done, some people asked for photos taken with the zombies, so here are a few of those:

Zombies Eating Brains

Oh, here I am again:

Blonde Girl Zombie

My outfit was a wooly sweater and long black skirt that I bought at Goodwill a few days prior, plus Doc Martin boots. I ripped out the seam on the bottom of the skirt, so it would appear frayed and I also cut a few holes in the blouse.  Plus, I wiped fake blood on my blouse and mixed in some black Halloween grease crayon to make the blood look older and dirtier.

By the way… I never noticed this before, but Goodwill sells used underwear!  I thought it was just a joke people told, but it’s actually true!  See?  I took a pic just in case anybody else thought it was just a joke, too!

So are you a fan of zombies or anything of the like?  I had a blast at the event and would love to do something like this again. Would you ever participate in something like this? Or have you already?  I’m curious, so please leave me a comment!

Wow! Thanks so much for posting about the zombie event. It looks like everyone had a lot of fun. I will have to check out future events in the St. Louis area as I am from there as well. Fabulous job on the make-up!!!

I never hear about cool stuff like this and I live in St. Charles (St. Louis area). I totally would have liked to go to this. That’s so cool that the news was there!

  4. Michelle says:

OMG! How did I not hear about this? It would have been awesome to play a zombie! Hopefully they’ll do something like this again! I would have been a St. Louis Rams football player zombie like from Plants vs. Zombies rather than a Walking Dead zombie…next time…

Like that’s terrifying! I watched the Walking Dead for 3 minutes and was scared out of my wits! You are my hero! Great make up btw…
