Turkey Pepperoni and Broccoli Salad logo

The holiday season is approaching, so I’m putting together some ideas for side dishes. But at the same time, I’m itching for some easy sides that will translate to add a little something extra special to my everyday meals, as well.

pepperoni minis

I received Hormel Turkey Pepperoni Minis in my shipment this month and the recipe on the back of the package seemed perfect!

Turkey Pepperoni & Broccoli Salad

Ingredients
  • 5 cups broccoli florets, cut into ½ inch pieces
  • 1 (4-ounce) package HORMEL Turkey Pepperoni Minis
  • 1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium red onion, diced
  • ¾ cup dried cranberries
  • ¾ cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine broccoli, pepperoni, cheese, red onion and dried cranberries. Mix dressing ingredients (mayo, sugar, vinegar, salt & pepper). Toss with salad dressing. Just before serving, add sunflower seeds.

All the ingredients complimented one another nicely and I know this will definitely be a side that I can make in an everyday meal or for a holiday side.

What kind of sides will you be making for the holidays?

TX Organics Steaks Review and Recipe

Oh gosh, I really couldn’t pass up the opportunity for my family to try out some steaks from TX Organics.  Steaks aren’t something we indulge in very often, so I was pretty excited to see how these tasted.

tx organics Review

TX Organics is a family owned and operated ranch in Northern California. They raise 100% USDA certified organic, grass fed, grass finished, Black Angus beef.  No grain, No hormones, No antibiotics…EVER! (That’s an exact quote from their website that I copied and pasted!)

meat collageOkay, I know looking at bloody steaks isn’t exactly appetizing (or is it?), but I needed to take a pic to show the assortment that was sent to me to review.  Wowza! I felt really fortunate when I opened the box. I had no idea there would be so much!

Try the World Spain 2015 plus a COUPON CODE

Try the World Spain

A taste of SPAIN showed up at my door for my Try the World box and I was pretty excited to dig in!  (To read my past reviews, click here)

Try-the-World-July-2015

One of my favorite things about traveling is sampling the local cuisine. The idea behind “Try the World” is that every other month, their team of travelers and local experts curate each box with products they feel best represent that box’s location theme, so it’s pretty fun for this to arrive at my doorstep in the absence of my travels!

Try the World Spain first look inside

Try the World ships to both the USA and Canada and once again the box was really heavy when it arrived which for some reason makes it more fun for me to open!

Spain info booklet try the world

Spain information card try the world

Try the World comes with an information card, detailing the products in the box, along with a culture guide. The culture guide for Spain contains a “How to use this box” guide with suggestions to host a Spanish Tapas Party with recipes, a card game to play and even a party playlist of classic Spanish songs!

P. Listo Floral Jams

P. Listo, Floral Jams: Rose Petals Jam I love unusual jams and jellies, so was excited to see some Rose Petals Jam in the box! Honestly, it looks so beautiful… like of a gift-giving quality that I’m nearly persuaded not to eat it, but my curiosity is getting the better of me. I Googled a little bit and read that it’s delicious on toast and also swirled into yogurt.

Red Rose Petals Jam Greek Yogurt

Edit: I did it! I put some in plain Greek Yogurt and it did not disappoint! This was soo delicious! It tasted of roses and honey!

El Avion Paprika

El Avion Paprika In love with this vintage packaging! I need some ideas on how to display this. Paprika is a spice I don’t use *too* incredibly often, but I do for a few dishes. I see there’s a recipe with it included as an ingredient in the culture guide, so I’m going to take a look at it.

Oleum Hispania

Oleum Hispania Extra-Virgin Olive Oil My go-to dressing on my salads is usually vinegar and EVOO, so I’m excited to try this. I go through olive oil so quickly because I eat a salad daily that I haven’t really invested in what would be considered a high quality brand. According to the information card, this brand is located in Cordoba, which is a region that is internationally recognized for producing high quality olive oil. The olives are grown in high-altitude orchards and just hours after they’re harvested, they grind them down at cold temperatures.

Ines Rosales Cortadillo

Ines Rosales Cortadillo Citrus Crumble Cakes This box contains 3 individually wrapped pastries that are about 2 inches long each and omg, I just ate one and it was soo decadent and rich and good. These are filled with cinnamon, lemon and filled with a cider cream and meant to be enjoyed with tea or coffee.

Espinaler Canned White Tuna

Espinaler Canned White Tuna I think I might have this on my salad for lunch.  This is a canned white tuna and it’s packed in sunflower oil and salt.

El Navarrico Salsa Tumaca Con Ajo

El Navarrico Salsa Tumaca Con Ajo (Tumaca Fresh Tomato Spread) So, this tomato sauce is made with ripe tomatoes, olive oil, fresh garlic and salt. The information card says it’s delicious to spread over toast or to be served as a dip and there’s also a recipe in the Culture to use with it that sounds delicious!

El Almendro Turron

Orange Crunchy Almond Turron– This is a holiday candy that dates back to 1883. This one is flavored with Almonds and Orange and is a lot less sweet than I thought it would be… the flavor is more on the subdued side. The candy is crunchy, but not as hard as peanut brittle and would be great paired with some hot tea!

Try the World is $39 and you receive a box every 60 days. You can sign up here if you like!

SPECIALS:

All new subscribers will get the Spain box AND a free Paris Box!

freebox

Use the Coupon code: LEAPFROGTRAVELS to receive 30% off your subscription!

So this was what was in my Try the World this month… what do you think? I think this is a box that I’ll find use for every one of the items!

  • Chi-Chi’s Flour Taco Style Tortillas
  • Hormel New Taco Meats Shredded Chicken
  • 2 Orange Bell Peppers, seeded and diced
  • 1 Can of Corn
  • Roma Tomatoes, diced
  • Salsa, to taste
  • 1 TBSP Oil
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in medium skillet and add orange bell peppers
  2. Saute peppers until nearly tender, then add corn and tomatoes
  3. Saute mixture until peppers are tender
  4. Meanwhile in a separate skillet, heat meat according to package
  5. Warm tortillas
  6. Serve tortillas topped with meat, topped with veggies and salsa (optional)

My girls loved this meal and it tasted like there was waaay more work that went into “cooking” it than there actually was.  Nobody needs to know that, though! 😉

What kind of easy meals are you preparing for busy week nights?

Birchbox September 2015 “You’re Beautiful” Subscription Box Review + Coupon Code

“You’re Beautiful” is the theme of this month’s Birchbox, and it was a nice surprise to read when I opened it, I’ll admit! :)

In this post, I unbox my September Birchbox, Plus, I have coupon codes at the bottom of this post.  I also redeemed my Birchbox points for some goodies in the shop, which I’ll show at the bottom, as well!

September 2015 Birchbox

In case you aren’t familiar, Birchbox is a subscription box service where you receive 4-6 beauty and lifestyle samples delivered to your mailbox every month. Boxes usually consist of samples, deluxe samples, and sometimes full-sized products. (To view my past Birchbox reviews, click here.)

The box inside the box

One of the perks of being a Birchbox subscriber is their awesome reward point system (which in my opinion, puts them in a higher league than many subscription box services). Every 100 points you receive equals $10 you can spend in the Birchbox shop on full-sized products. Points expire within a year being issued, so you can save them up, but you can’t hoard them forever!

September 2015 first look inside

There are a several ways to receive Birchbox Points. You can receive them from referring friends to join Birchbox, for shopping in the Birchbox store and sometimes they’ll pop you a surprise special promo codes to receive even more points for shopping during a specific time-frame. One super easy way to receive reward points is to review the samples you receive in your Birchbox. For each review you submit, you receive 10 Birchbox points. So, for instance, I received 5 products this month. That is 50 points I’ll be receiving just for reviews which equals $5. So as you can see, they’re really easy to accumulate.

september 2015 Birchbox Info Card

Although every month the contents of subscribers’ boxes are a surprise, you can control the type of content you receive in your boxes by filling out your profile. So as a subscriber, I can click if I enjoy hair samples more so than cosmetics, how experienced I consider myself to be with beauty products, etc, and they curate my box according to these preferences, hoping that I’ll be able to make the most out of my samples. I think there’s somewhere between 30-50 variations of boxes each month!

Birchbox Contents:

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner

Davines LOVE Smoothing Shampoo ($7.50)-

*BONUS* Davines LOVE Conditioner  ($1.14)-

I’m a big fan of Davines’ shampoos and conditioners. I redeemed my BB points on some a few months ago (the hair color protecting line), so I was excited to try the smoothing shampoo.  As a bonus, they also put in a conditioner pouch.  I love the way this shampoo smells.  It is pretty strong and citrusy, but I think it smells fab!

Malin + Goetz grapefruit face cleanser and moisturizer

Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser ($1.95)-

*BONUS* Malin + Goetz Vitamin e Face Moisturizer ($1.14)-

It’s been awhile since I’ve used a gel facial cleanser and I’d forgotten how refreshing and soft it leaves my face. I’m really digging this stuff! The moisturizer was added as a bonus this month and I haven’t used it yet, but already I’m digging how it’s oil-free and contains vitamin E.

English Laundry Eau de Parfum Signature for HerEnglish Laundry Eau de Parfum Signature for Her0 ($1.08)- I’m so undecided on how I feel about this fragrance! It’s a floral, woodsy smell, but the dry down smells a little too sweet for me, which I didn’t know was possible, since I love sweet fragrances.  I think maybe it just doesn’t work with my body chemistry, but on someone else I might love how it smells!

Juice Beauty Green Apple PeelJuice Beauty Green Apple Peel ($5.14) –  If you haven’t tried anything by Juice Beauty yet, you really must.  Juice Beauty is an organic beauty and skincare company and the Green Apple Peel, I feel, is the staple/most popular product of their line, so I was excited that it turned up in my box this month!

pop beauty pop portfoio eyeshadowPop Beauty Pop Portfoio Eyeshadow- Sugar Plum ($8)-  These are a beautiful color set that would compliment my eye color, but I’ve tried out this brand on several occasions and I think I would rather choose to swap this with someone who likes glittery shadows more than I do. I prefer matte (with some shimmer is okay) rather than a lot of shimmer with buildable color. My lids are maturing and I think that’s the best route to go!

Conclusion:

After I totaled the price of the samples up, I came to $26.20 which is over double the $10/a month it costs to subscribe. If I add in the $5 in rewards points I get for reviewing the products on the Birchbox website, it brings it up to $31.20 which is a phenomenal value!

I redeemed Birchbox Points!

birchbox pointsThere was a fab deal last month, where you’d receive extra Birchbox points with your order, PLUS you could add a sample pack if you ordered over $35, so I cashed in points and received the following:

  1. Benefit: The POREfessional- This is an awesome face primer! Smooths out my skin and minimizes more pores to prep my face for my foundation. Makes my foundation last ALL day.
  2. Marcelle: Waterproof indigo eyeliner- This was a part of the mystery sample pack received free for placing a $35 order. I own a couple eyeliners from this company and they’ve worked out pretty well!
  3. Vasanti Brighten Up! Exfoliating Cleanser- This was the other item in the mystery sample pack.  I’ve tried this cleanser before and enjoy the light exfoliation it brings.  So I was satisfied with my free mystery sample pack for sure.
  4. Parlor by Jeff Chastain Blowout Spray- Holy mother of….  !!!!!!  I’ve been researching a nice thermal protection spray the smells magnificent and I’ve found it! This stuff is awesome and leaves my hair soo silky and shiny and soft!  I highly recommend this stuff. I use it to blow style straight my hair with a round brush and I have no need for a straightener.

Balloon Glow Fest Smucker’s Snackation Destination pt. 2

The girls and I have spent this past summer bonding and just trying to have as much fun as possible doing inexpensive activities out and about St. Louis.   Last week, I wrote about how the girls and I went to our “Snackation Destination“: Walmart to scoop up some Smucker‘s goodies to take on our outing to the Balloon Glow Fest in Eureka, MO!

Out of the Smucker‘s goodies we looked at from Walmart the other day, we chose the following to make goodies to pack in our cooler:
