Mommy Reality Challenge: Jem and the Holograms

There is a new Jem live action recreation movie coming out based on the cartoon series. Jem is a series from my childhood, but thanks to Netflix, my daughters discovered the series and fell in love with it. They’ve probably watched the whole series 6 times through at this point and, as we moms know, when our kids get into a TV series, they want the toy line! That’s the one downfall about kids discovering our generation’s glorious cartoons.  The toy lines are rare and if you want them to have any at all, Ebay is your best bet.

And that’s all fine and dandy and everything, but…

Yeah, not exactly happening :(.

So anyway, when we heard about the new movie coming out, we were sooo excited! Yeah, Jem! 80’s cheesy punk rawky gloriousness!

In case you aren’t familiar, the 80’s series Jem was about the music group “Jem and the Holograms” vs. the other hot chick band “The Misfits” competing to be the ultimate and best group.

With many awesome shenanigans along the way like this:

And especially this:

But I could barely make it through the trailer teaser that was released a few weeks ago (And I will NOT embed it in this post– I’m too bitter and don’t want to contribute to it getting hits). It looks like some coming-of-age motivational film about young girls trying to make it in a band and get signed to a record label. Aside from the fact that they have different colored hair and share the same names as the character’s from the cartoon, this is NOT my Jem.

What kind of fan base are they trying to draw? It just seems they’re trying to bring us 80’s girls in and milk our pocketbooks by slapping the title Jem on it while greedily catering to a different generation to make even more money. Either do it justice or don’t do it at all!

Okay, /end rant. But I just don’t understand why they have to remake everything. Just leave well enough alone.

“Why are you blogging about Jem and the Holograms, Celeste?” Why, it’s because the latest Mommy Reality topic picked by Jen from JENerally Informed is, “What are your kids watching over and over?” and I got excited and just had to use the opportunity to step on my 80’s soapbox!

So, it’s your turn to join in! You have until Friday to show us!

My oldest daughter introduced the 7 year old to the cartoon and she has watched it all the way through now about 7 times herself. I was so excited when I heard the news (the oldest child discovered this tidbit) that it was coming to theaters. Then like you we watched the trailer about 20 times…. and besides having funky hair colors and geometric designs colored on their faces I am not so sure anymore. Plus, they had a 1D song playing with the trailer!! What the heck!!

In other news, The Rock is in discussions to remake Big Trouble In Little China. That really should not happen.

Oh man… I didn’t realize they had a 1D song either. Okay, YES I heard about that remake, too. They seriously need to knock all this stuff off.

I love when my kids watch shows that I used to! Like Scooby-Doo and Magic School Bus! I don’t get a lot of these new cartoons. They seem stupid.

  3. Jenna says:

Oh hilarious! My daughter had a Jem birthday party in 1st grade! I can’t wait to tell her about this!

Teen Titans — this is on aaalll the time. Thank God it’s actually a pretty awesome and awesomely funny cartoon. Much better than past obsessions My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake — The Care Bears made me want to drive a stake in my eye. My girl still has to watch an occasional La La Loopsy and Pokemon is pretty dumb & annoying, but she totally redeems herself with her #1 Teen, Teen, Titans — Go!!!

I love when they get hooked on something awesome like that. Lately, aside from Jem, we’re in an annoying stage again with Ever After High.

Oh my, I do and don’t want to go watch the new trailer now. It’s like a train wreck, I don’t want to see it, but I can’t look away.
