Taste Trunk, who kindly sent me this box to review, is a foodie lovers’ subscription box company. Each box contains 4-5 premium food items and is delivered monthly.
Currently, there are 4 different subscription types to choose from:
- Gourmet Subscription
- Sweet Subscription
- BBQ Subscription
- Healthy Chef Subscription
The one they sent me was the BBQ box… and I just got a new grill, so this is perfect timing!
If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen me going a bit nutso over the way this box looked the other day when it arrived! It is a thick and sturdy box, but NOPE it’s not made out of wood. The wooden detailing is all designed on the box (which was delivered inside regular mailing packaging).
My favorite part is the handles drawn on the sides of the Taste Trunk box to make it look like a trunk. So adorable! I’m a huge fan of “presentation”, so I was sold before I even opened the box. To be honest, I was so mesmerized before even opening it, that if I peered inside the box only to find a bag of Cheetos laying inside, I’d probably STILL be like, “OMG this is the BEST THING EVER.” So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, if you know someone who is huge on wrapping and presentation when it comes to gifts, this would def be a great gift for them.
Hallelujah! See what I mean? How gorgeous is this?
I know I don’t usually sound this bonkers over subscription boxes BEFORE I look inside at the goodies, but this is definitely worth the extra appreciation. Just look at it! Out of all the boxes I’ve reviewed, I know Taste Trunk will always stick out in my mind because it’s so pretty. And it was exciting to open, too… like a present!
Inside the antique paper decorated envelope are the information cards. Some subscription boxes just list the contents on one card and maybe a brief description, but with Taste Trunk, each product gets their own individual card. Each card contains the location the food item was created in, a description of the product, suggestions on how to use the product and a recipe!
The above is the first glance at the contents! I wasn’t sure which theme of box I was getting, so it was all a surprise
Two Snooty Chefs Hungarian Ragout Spice Blend, Old World Flavor ($6.95)- This is a spice blend that says to try with beef entrees or to put in stews and soups. There are two recipes on this card: Hungarian Mushroom Soup and Cauliflower Cream soup. The Cauliflower soup sounds delicious and really easy.
Lillie’s Q Barbeque Sauces and Rubs- IVORY ($8)- This is BBQ sauce with a mayo and a cajun kick base which the card says it’s good to use with a variety of foods including BBQing chicken and for dipping fries. You can also use it as a dressing for homemade coleslaw and it gives a recipe for Grilled Coleslaw on the card which sounds pretty much amazing!
Willamette Valley Mustards Jalapeno y Vino Mustard ($5)- If I could pick one condiment for the rest of my life, it’d probably be mustard. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE condiments of all kinds, but you can pinch and pull mustard in so many different directions and that’s what I love about it. As it stands, I have a little over a handful of different varieties of mustard in my fridge because I’m a sucker for different flavorings and they ALL serve a purpose :).
The recipe on the card for this mustard is Croque-Monsieur which is a French grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a buttery sauce on top called “béchamel”.
San Francisco Salt Company Hawaiian Lava Salt ($4.75)- This is a salt that’s ideal to use as a finishing salt for foods and desserts, the information card says. It gives a recipe for Chocolate-Covered Salted Caramel Cups. I’ve never made candy before and these sound delicious and pretty easy to make!
1849 Tri-Tip Meat Marinade ($4.58)- The card says this is the perfect marinade for Tri-Tip, sirloin tips, Porterhouse, and T-bone Steaks. I’m really not a steak-eater, but I’ll still use this for BBQing with guests or something. The recipe on the card is for Pancetta-Wrapped Asparagus with Citronette.
The total for everything in my May Taste Trunk box came to $29.28 which is pretty close to the cost of the service at $33/month. I think it’s worth the $33 because I feel they really have put great care into the details of this service– the way that they styled it, plus the items are unique and they give lots of attention to making sure the products get used in friendly (but unique) recipes to try. I think a fun idea would be to gather a few foodie friends together once a month and cook all the recipes and enjoy them together! I noticed this box has a soup recipe, a couple side dish recipes, a main course recipe and dessert recipe, so it would be perfect!
What do you think of Taste Trunk? If you’re interested in subscribing, again it’s $33/month you can click here to do so if you like! I think I’d be interested in trying the Healthy or Gourmet boxes next!
