May 2014 Conscious Box

I took advantage of the Living Social deal for the Conscious Subscription Box this month and received it just a few days ago!  So without further ado, here is my review!

With Conscious Box, every month you get a hand-picked selection of eco-friendly, natural, GMO-free goods and samples to try.

You can choose whether you’d like their Classic Box, a Vegan Box, or a Gluten-Free box. Additionally, you can choose whether you’d like to receive the “Taster” box with 5-8 items every month or the “Plus” box which has 8-12.  I received the “Plus” box this month.

The Information Card

The theme for May’s Conscious Box was “Clean and Green”, so I gathered that the contents of the box were to help me clean and feel clean.

——–

BioBag: 3 Gallon Bag – So… the first item I pulled out was a waste bag.  womp womp.  lol!  I know, not the most exciting. But this bag is completely compostable because it’s made with plants, vegetable oils and Mater-bi. So you don’t have to worry about bad stuff happening to the Earth when you use it.

Flents: Biodegradable Lens Wipes– I thought these worked pretty well when I used them to clean my glasses.  I did have to have a microfiber cloth on-hand to dry and pick up a little bit of lint.

San Francisco Bay: Gourmet Coffee– I’m not a coffee drinker, but hubby will enjoy this, I’m sure.

Spatone: Purabsorb Iron– This is an iron supplement in drinkable form. You can drink it straight from the pack or dilute it in some juice or water.  Except grape juice, it says.  I wonder why?

Weleda: Replenishing Shampoo & Conditioner– I have really thick hair, so initially I didn’t think there was enough product in the shampoo packet for me… especially because it’s a type of shampoo and that doesn’t lather, so it’s hard to tell.  The conditioner doesn’t feel lotiony or silky when I applied it, so I wasn’t sure if there was enough in that packet, either.  But I have to say, I blew my hair dry after usage and did *not* use any additional leave-in conditioners and these both worked very well.  I’m actually really surprised and impressed!  The only downfall is that the fragrance is pretty strong for me.

Crystal Deodorant Towelettes– Again with these deodorant towelettes. I tried using the Ban ones from my Beauty Box 5 the other day and I don’t think these things are really supposed to be for your underarms.  Maybe other places that perspire. I don’t know… these things are too modern and confuse me.

ECover: Dishwasher Tablets– These worked well! Cleaned nicely… streak free.  Can’t ask for much better.

Cascadian Farm: Super Squares– The texture of this reminded me a little of… bird seed. LOL, I don’t know how else to describe it! It tasted okay, though. Satisfied a little bit of hunger.

Choice: Organic Tea– A fair trade tea that I’ll be passing along to my tea drinking sister.

Larabar: Cherry Pie Larabars seem to be a staple in subscription boxes. I always see reviews of them turning up in various subs, but I’ve yet to receive one… until now! (Which is good because I really like them.  Especially this flavor!)

Serengetee Fabric Swatch– Okay, so I’m supposed to look at this swatch and then go online and order a t-shirt made from the design if I like it.  …I think.

Nortic Naturals– So I just had a freak-out moment because I was going over the information card and it said that these were pet vitamins and I actually ate them myself earlier. BUT, I believe the info card is listing the wrong vitamins and these are for regular human consumption. You should have seen my face, though, when reading the information card when I thought I ate a dog pill.

Pangea Organics Eye Cream– An itty-bitty sample here!  Wish it was a little bigger, but I love any sample I can get of eye cream…  especially of the organic variety. I’ll be trying this one out tonight.

Barbara’s Bakery: Snackimals Vanilla Blast– This is such a strange coincidence, but I signed up for a month of Conscious Box about 1 year and a half ago and got the exact same cereal sample in it.  What are the odds that each time I signed up for Conscious Box, I get the exact same sample? (I guess 2 for 2)

ALO Refresh Light Drink – This drink… is actually the best drink I’ve had in my entire life.  I’m SERIOUS.  I’m a huge fan of infused water and this is so refreshing like one. I received the Cucumber and Cantaloupe blend and the best part of it is the aloe vera juice and bits floating around in it. SO refreshing and good. I’ve already Googled locations where I can buy more and it looks like the Vitamin World down the road carries it.  So excited!

So, the verdict of my first Conscious Box in a couple years? I am a little bummed over a lot of the small-sizes of the samples. Some foil samples are okay, but many times samples that size don’t give me an adequate amount to truly try the product. HOWEVER.. I have noticed that they’re improving their box. The dishwasher tabs, snack bars, and especially the drink were wins.

If you’re interested in trying Conscious Box, you can click here if you’d like. Subscriptions for the Taster Box are $9.95 a month. Subscriptions for the Plus Box are $19.95 a month.

Are you a Conscious Box subscriber? What did you think of your box this month?

  1. What a cool box!! I think grape juice inhibits the absorption of iron which is why it would go well withthe pur absorb.

  2. SZ says:

We got a box in June and one in July, and I was extremely disappointed. We paid $8 for a livingsocial deal for a box and it was hardly worth that much. It was mostly samples for health and beauty products, along with a few chocolate bars (shipped to Phoenix, in June) and I didn’t like most of the health and beauty stuff when I tried them.
Additionally, I cancelled my subscription the day that my first box arrived (July 1), and was told that I had to pay full price for another month since I had cancelled after the beginning of the month. Really?? They expect people to cancel BEFORE they get a box or be on the hook for an extra month? This is especially infuriating since I didn’t get the notice saying the box had shipped until 7/18, meaning that they clearly could have cancelled my next box on the first of the month. Yes, their FAQ says subscriptions must be canceled before the first or you get charged again, but this seems to border on deceptive to me. I contacted customer service and they stuck to the FAQ and charged me for the second box (which just arrived and was a bit better than the first, but still not worth $20).
