January Birchbox Review: Let’s Do This Theme

Birchbox January 2015

Birchbox January 2015

Wow, my Birchbox came quicker than it ever has before.  So what does that mean for me? It means I post it super late into the month, LOL.  Ugh, I’ve been sooo busy, but I’m still so annoyed with myself.  Okay, I’ll quick jump out of my pity-party and get crackin’ at this instead.

In case you aren’t familiar, Birchbox is a subscription box service where you receive 4-6 beauty and lifestyle samples delivered to your mailbox every month. Boxes usually consist of samples, deluxe samples, and sometimes full-sized products. (To view my past Birchbox reviews, click here.)

One of the perks of being a Birchbox subscriber is their awesome reward point system. Every 100 points you receive equals $10 you can spend in the Birchbox shop on full-sized products.  Points expire within a year being issued, so you can save them up, but you can’t hoard them forever! (I redeemed a lot of mine last month!)

One way to receive reward points is to review the samples you receive in your Birchbox. For each review you submit, you receive 10 Birchbox points. So, for instance, I received 5 products this month. That is 50 points I’ll be receiving just for reviews which equals $5.  So as you can see, they’re really easy to accumulate.

Every month, Birchbox has a box theme.  The theme for January 2015 is “Let’s Do This” and the information card speaks about we’re charging into 2015 vowing to make the most of every minute.

First Look Inside

First Look Inside

Although every month the contents of subscribers’ boxes are a surprise, you can control the type of content you receive in your boxes by filling out your profile. So as a subscriber, I can click if I enjoy hair samples more so than cosmetics, how experienced I consider myself to be with beauty products, etc, and they curate my box according to these preferences, hoping that I’ll be able to make the most out of my samples.  I think there’s somewhere between 30-50 variations of boxes each month!

Birchbox Contents:

Curly Hair Solutions- Curl Keeper Gel

Curly Hair Solutions- Curl Keeper Gel

Curly Hair Solutions:  Curl Keeper Gel ($2.20)- This is something I haven’t tried out yet.  I have curly hair, but, truth be told, I style it straight, so I don’t really need to open a surplus of curly-haired styling products because they would go to waste. I might pass this on to a friend (and I might try to tweak my profile so it hopefully will make it to where I don’t receive curly styling products)

Karma Organic Spa

Karma Organic Spa

Karma Organic Spa Soybean Oil and Tea Tree Oil Nail Polish Remover ($1.65)- This is the first time I’ve received a nail polish remover in a subscription box.  I’m interested in trying this one out because it’s non-toxic and made with tea tree oil.

Manna Kadar Lip Locked

Manna Kadar Lip Locked

Manna Kadar Lip Locked Priming Gloss Stain (.20)- I tried this out and liked it!  I like the concept of a priming gloss stain because it helps fill my lips in a little more to “fudge” my pucker a little larger than it actually is before I apply my gloss ;).  Cool product.  Two thumbs up and I’d like to try it in other shades.

Paula's Choice Resist Moisture Renewal Oil Booster

Paula’s Choice Resist Moisture Renewal Oil Booster

Paula’s Choice Resist Moisture Renewal Oil Booster (6.27)- This came in handy because my face has been so incredibly dry these past couple weeks to the point where it literally felt like I was getting new wrinkles!  My face has actually felt so dry, it hurts!  So I’ve been putting this oil serum on at night paying attention to my forehead and then around my mouth was really chapped, as well and it helped repair that.

Whish Three Whishes Body Butter

Whish Three Whishes Body Butter

Whish Three Whishes Body Butter ($3.52)- I tried the Whish body foam a few months ago and really enjoyed it, so I was happy to see this in the box. I seem to get a hand lotion every month in my boxes, so I’ve taken to sticking them in the car to use. This lotion really worked well!  In my opinion, it has a Lavender scent with a baby powder finish fragrance which I’m not too fond of, but I’m overlooking that fact because it helped my hands so well!

Conclusion:

When I total up the value of my products it comes to: $13.84 which is more than my $10/month subscription free.  If I factor in the $5 I get for reviewing the items on the site, it brings my total to $18.84.  I’ve definitely received boxes of greater value in the past and I’d have to say this month I felt slightly let-down as one of the larger samples (the curl keeper) is one that I won’t use. Hopefully next month will make up for it.  Not every month will hit the mark!

Are you a Birchbox subscriber?  What was your favorite in the box this month?

If you’re interested in subscribing to Birchbox, it’s $10/month and you can click here to sign up if you’d like!

  1. I don’t use a lot of beauty products, so this wouldn’t really work for me, but seeing all these subscription boxes really make me want to try one out!

  2. Melissa says:

I love subscription boxes. I’ve never tried a makeup one before but this looks like a great option. Thanks for the review.

  3. I keep saying I am going to do it, have yet to do it, but want to do it – I just need to sign up!

  4. Hi Celeste, it must be fun getting to try out different cosmetics without breaking the bank. I could seriously do with some magic oil to help my face feel more supple, The winter weather and my addiction to keeping the wood burner going does my face no good whatsoever!

Having curly hair that is prone to a fluff attack every now and again (depending on the weather!) I have tried a number of products, but never Curl keeper.

  5. Jen says:

Curl keeper, where has that been all of my life! My hair is a majorly dry big old fro right now that needs some TLC.

  6. Amila says:

this sounds really worth.Seems their point system is really worth. If you use it correctly,it seems monthly subscription rate is very low.

I’ve tried Whish and they make great shaving products. I’d love to try out their Lavender body butter. I bet it smells soothing. #productreviewparty
