Since December, I’ve made it a point to add a pack of Always brand Maxi Pads to my cart every week on my grocery shopping outing to donate to a local food pantry at the end of the year.
Earlier this evening, while I was cooking dinner, my ever-observant 5 and 7 year old girls noticed my increasingly growing maxi pad stash and asked what they were. Inwardly groaning, I told them the truth and nothing more, hoping the answer would suffice their curiosity– that they were maxi-pads that I’m donating to the food pantry at the end of the year.
“But, Mama… what are they FOR.”
Not quite prepared to have THAT conversation and still busily fixing dinner, I racked my brain for an answer that would be truthful yet wouldn’t lead to more questions for that time being until I was better prepared.
“Well, maxi-pads are… for women to catch stuff from going unwanted places”, I said, perspiring slightly.
That answer seemed to do the trick because I received absolutely NO interruptions for the remainder of my dinner prep. Phew! They were content at play with giggling and all!
Their bickering came at perfect-timing… right as I was fetching them for dinner.
I walked down the stairs to this: Their Fisher Price Loving Family Doll House with the packs of Maxi Pads stacked all around it like … a feminine fortress.
Charlotte started in immediately, “Mama, the naughty neighborhood kids keep throwing the balls and breaking all the windows. The Mama doesn’t want them to, so she put the Maxi Pads up to catch the balls. Delia says we need to take them out of the packages, but I thought it’d work better if we left them in. Who is right?”
They both stood looking expectantly at me for the answer, while I was trying to wrap my mind around WHAT could have inspired this game. And then I remembered– Earlier I told them maxi-pads are used by women to catch things from going unwanted places.
I wiggled my way out of the situation by telling them there was an emergency I needed to tend to on my computer.
So, here I am. Typing this up.
