It’s beginning to be a real treat seeing what my Birchbox is going to look like every month! I try not to spoil it by looking online, but sometimes it’s unavoidable because I’ll see someone post theirs on social media somewhere, ugh!
In case you aren’t familiar, Birchbox is a subscription box service where you receive 4-6 beauty and lifestyle samples delivered to your mailbox every month. Boxes usually consist of samples, deluxe samples, and sometimes full-sized products. (To view my past Birchbox reviews, click here.)
💕 (I also redeemed some Birchbox points for more goodies that I’ll post at the bottom of this entry!) 💕
One of the perks of being a Birchbox subscriber is their awesome reward point system (which in my opinion, puts them in a high league than many subscription box services). Every 100 points you receive equals $10 you can spend in the Birchbox shop on full-sized products. Points expire within a year being issued, so you can save them up, but you can’t hoard them forever! (I redeemed mine for some more haircare items this month. I’ll post my loot at the bottom of the post!)
There are a several ways to receive Birchbox Points. You can receive them from referring friends to join Birchbox, for shopping in the Birchbox store and sometimes they’ll pop you a surprise special promo codes to receive even more points for shopping during a specific time-frame. One super easy way to receive reward points is to review the samples you receive in your Birchbox. For each review you submit, you receive 10 Birchbox points. So, for instance, I received 6 products this month. That is 60 points I’ll be receiving just for reviews which equals $6. So as you can see, they’re really easy to accumulate.
This month, Birchbox was running a giveaway and issued these prize cards in all of our boxes. The grand prize was $1,000 to spend in the Birchbox shop and then there were also close to 200 runner-up prizes for totebags with deluxe beauty samples inside.
I flipped mine over and entered the code online and got 20% off my next purchase. Womp, womp.
Every month, Birchbox has a box theme. The theme for June 2015 is “Adventure”. “Adventure is a state of mind. It’s about exploring the unknown, dreaming beyond the horizon, and letting go of the word ‘no’. ” I don’t usually type the info cards word-for-word, but I liked that.
Although every month the contents of subscribers’ boxes are a surprise, you can control the type of content you receive in your boxes by filling out your profile. So as a subscriber, I can click if I enjoy hair samples more so than cosmetics, how experienced I consider myself to be with beauty products, etc, and they curate my box according to these preferences, hoping that I’ll be able to make the most out of my samples. I think there’s somewhere between 30-50 variations of boxes each month!
Coola SPF 50 Sport ($3.20)- I normally whine when I get suncreen in my subscription box because it’s not really something I’m enthusiastic to experiment with– I just buy whatever, but this actually comes in handy because my sister is getting married next weekend (I’m sure you realize that by this point if you follow my Instagram, lol) and I’m putting together a little “Bridesmaid emergency Kit” which includes items like band-aids, travel-sunscreen, etc. so this will come in handy. It’s mango-fragranced and smells really good!
Dr Jart Ceramidin Cream ($4.80)- This is a face moisturizer for severely dry skin that hydrates and has “plumping” qualities. I have combination skin so I probably won’t get much use from this, but I might swap with someone. From the description, it seems like it’s pretty luxurious.
Marcell Waterproof Eyeliner– Mulberry ($7.70)- FINALLY! Omg, I have so many black eyeliners from subscription boxes that I’m thrilled to get a plum color. My go-tos that I usually purchase are browns or purples, so I’m really enthusiastic about this. I’m even more enthusiastic that this is waterproof because no matter the season, I have to have waterproof because my eyelids are oily. I’ve used Marcelle brand liners in the past and really like them.
Number 4 Super Comb Prep and Protect ($4.80)- Any time I receive a thermal protection spray in a subscription box, it’s a win and I’m especially glad to receive this one because I’m really starting to loathe the fragrance of my current go-to. I haven’t tried it, yet, but I’m already digging it because it’s sulfate-free and has a bunch of natural components that work together to condition hair like algae and soy-yogurt.
Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer with Retinol– ($8.70) – I’m really excited to try this! It’s a light face lotion for all skin types that’s supposed to reduce signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles and crows feet. I definitely have a few of those things creeping in, so any type of product like this is always appreciated. A nice-sized sample, too with a pump and everything.
Pura Vida Lace Headband ($2.25)- This headband was a bonus in this month’s box. I’ve been getting into lace and cloth headbands lately, so it was a pleasant treat and a pretty sage color. It is a little tight, though. I have a pretty big head.
After I totaled the price of the samples up, I came to $31.45 which is triple the $10/a month it costs to subscribe. If I add in the $6 in rewards points I get for reviewing the products on the Birchbox website, it brings it up to $37.45 which is a phenomenal value!
I redeemed Birchbox Points!
I know I have lots of fellow mommies that read my blog… are you one of them? If so, do you have as hard of a time buying nice things for yourself as I sometimes do because the money could certainly be utilized elsewhere?
Birchbox reward’s system, like I mentioned, is a HUGE reason why I stick with my subscription even when, every once in awhile, I get a box that is just so-so. Most of the time I redeem my Birchbox points for nice haircare products and it helps me avoid that mommy “guilt-factor” of spending too much, but it also helps satisfy my shopping urge. I receive points reviewing my boxes every month and and referring friends to join Birchbox and save them up to “shop” with. But I try to shop on a day when there’s a nice promo running… like a couple weeks ago I received an email to received 75 Birchbox points if I made a purchase of $35 or more in the Birchbox Shop.
I’ve sampled a few of the hair products from Davines with Birchbox and was really impressed so I thought I’d actually try the formula for color-treated hair. I love how shiny, smooth and soft this set leaves my hair, plus it smells fantastic and clean. I guess probably the best part is that the points helped me get them for free!
