August 2014 Birchbox

August 2014 Birchbox

Wow! My August Birchbox came super early! But of course, when something like that happens, other life events prevent me from posting right away (the chaos of school starting back up)!

Outside of the Box

Outside of the Box

This month, my box was addressed, “The Queenly Celeste”. It was actually my daughter who noticed that.  I wonder how many times something like that has happened and I’ve just ignored it and ripped right into the box out of excitement?

In case you aren’t familiar, Birchbox is a subscription box service where you receive 4-6 beauty and lifestyle samples delivered to your mailbox every month. Boxes usually consist of samples, deluxe samples, and sometimes full-sized products. (To view my past Birchbox reviews, click here.)

One of the perks of being a Birchbox subscriber is their awesome reward point system. Every 100 points you receive equals $10 you can spend in the Birchbox shop on full-sized products.  Points expire within a year being issued, so you can save them up, but not for forever!

One way to receive reward points is to review the samples you receive in your Birchbox. For each review you submit, you receive 10 Birchbox points. So, for instance, I received 5 products this month. That is 50 points I’ll be receiving just for reviews which equals $5.  So as you can see, they’re really easy to accumulate.

A few other ways to receive points: If you sign up for a  3,6, or 12 month subscription, if you refer friends to subscribe, or by shopping in the Birchbox shop.

Every month, Birchbox has a box theme.  This month’s theme is “Lighten Up” which speaks to the height of the summer and keeping cool, but also to being light-hearted (Notice the “tee-hee” pouch?)

Birchbox Contents:

Cailyn Cosmetics, Dizzolv’It Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm ($4.68)- I’ve never tried a product like this before! It’s an antioxidant cleanser balm that you massage into your skin to remove even your waterproof makeup. It feels a little greasy at first, but it doesn’t leave a residue after you rinse it off like a lot of makeup removers. My face feels really soft. I really dig it!

Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume ($1.20)- I know a lot of people don’t care for fragrance samples in their subscription boxes, but I love receiving them.  Unfortunately, this fragrance smells a bit more mature than I’m used to wearing.

Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow ( $4.73)- I don’t usually do the BB Cream thing.  I might use this as a base for my foundation, though.

ModelCo Shimmer Bronzer  ($.92)- Because of my profile settings, I don’t usually get a lot of makeup products in my Birchbox– mostly skincare, so this bronzer was a treat! I may alter my profile so I start getting more makeup! This bronzer went on a little dark for me, but I was able to buff it in with a kabuki brush. The shimmer wasn’t overbearing, which can be a concern if you’re getting older so it doesn’t magnify imperfections.

Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream  with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 ($1.87)-SPF in a hand cream is a nice idea because hands age, too. I’m not sure if it is top priority to invest in this, but it’s something to consider.

Box faves this month are probably the Dissolv’it Balm and the Bronzer.

After adding everything up, the total comes to 13.40.  Not the most valuable Birchbox I’ve received, but still more than the subscription price. If I factor in the extra $5  (in points) I receive for reviewing each these items, my total comes up to: $26.87.

If you’re interested in subscribing to Birchbox, it’s $10/month and you can click here to learn more if you’d like!

  1. Thanks for sharing your review because I wanted to know how it compared to the POPSUGAR Must Have subscription box. Also, what is BB Cream? #productreviewparty

  2. Not too bad of a box. I was a member of Julep but cancelled just because I wanted to find something with more of a variety of products.
    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Louida says:

This looks like you got some good products in it, I just wish you gotten a more expensive variety. Out of all the products you received I would like to try the bronzer. #ProductReviewParty

  4. I’ve heard a lot about Birchbox and box subscriptions.

I’d try the brozer and hand-cream.

    The pouch is too cute.

I found you via Louida’s link up.

  5. I love reading about the unboxing of these Birch Boxes – great review.

  6. staciebra says:

Another great box review! The bronzer is something I’d like to try out.

  7. Victoria says:

When I saw the perfume in the main photos I was hoping it was a winner. Sorry the smell was not ideal for you. #ProductReviewParty

  8. If you want to stroll on your roof, it really is important that you just do it at a time when it really is not as well cold or hot. Intense climate tends to create shingles really brittle, so walking on them during this time can cause a great deal of harm. Morning will be the very best time in the course of summer months, and afternoon is ideal in the winter.
